DOT: 2023 Philippine tourism more than 2019

Christina Frasco, the Secretary of the Department of Tourism in the Philippines, noted that the inbound travel market in 2023 rebounded more quickly than anticipated. In the period from January 1 to December 31, 2023, the country’s international tourism receipts surged to an estimated PHP482.54 billion (US$8.65 billion), as stated in a press release from her department. This figure marked a remarkable 124.87-percent increase from the previous year and was nearly on par with the PHP482.15 billion recorded in 2019 before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Philippines achieved an estimated 66 percent recovery rate for its 2019 “all-time high” international visitor arrivals. In 2023, the country welcomed a total of 5.45 million international visitors, with 91.8 percent being foreigners and the remaining 8.2 percent (447,082) being overseas Filipinos.

Notably, the Philippines, with its extensive casino industry open to both locals and foreigners, experienced a boost in the sector in 2023, benefiting not only from domestic demand but also from a return of overseas visitors.

We will continue to realize the vision of this administration to make tourism a catalyst for economic growth and resurgence

Christina Frasco, DOT Secretary

South Korea maintained its position as the top source of international visitors to the Philippines, accounting for 26.41 percent of all arrivals in 2023. The United States followed with nearly 16.6 percent, Japan with 5.6 percent, Australia with 4.9 percent, and China with about 4.8 percent of all arrivals.

Looking ahead, Secretary Frasco expressed the country’s ambition to attract 7.7 million foreign visitors in the current year after surpassing its arrival goals for 2023.

Increased tourism can be highly beneficial for the casino and gaming industry. A boost in tourism can positively impact the local economy, creating a ripple effect that benefits various sectors, including the casino industry. As tourists spend money on accommodations, dining, and other amenities, there’s an increased likelihood that they will allocate part of their budget to entertainment, such as casino gaming. International visitors, in particular, may be drawn to the unique offerings of a casino destination, contributing to its appeal on a global scale. This can establish the destination as a key player in the international casino market, attracting not only tourists but also potential investors and partnerships.
