Philippine Senator cautions local government units: zero tolerance for POGOs

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian on POGOs

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has issued a strong reminder to local government units (LGUs) throughout the Philippines, urging them to learn from the recent suspension of officials in Porac, Pampanga, by the Office of the Ombudsman. The officials were suspended due to allegations that they allowed Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) to operate within their jurisdiction, despite a clear directive from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordering a total ban on such operations.

The officials involved in the suspension include the mayor, vice mayor, several councilors, and the head of Porac’s Business Permit and Licensing Office. This suspension followed a government raid on the Lucky South 99 POGO hub, which exposed ongoing illegal operations that persisted even after national orders to halt POGO activities. These local officials are now facing charges of Gross Neglect of Duty and could potentially be dismissed from their posts if found guilty of these violations.

Senator Gatchalian emphasized that local governments play a critical role in maintaining law and order within their areas and must act swiftly when dealing with illegal activities. He underscored the importance of adhering to national directives, particularly the President’s firm stance on banning POGOs, which have been linked to criminality and other issues. This case, according to Gatchalian, serves as a stark reminder for LGUs to not turn a blind eye to illegal enterprises, urging them to remain proactive in preventing unlawful operations from taking root in their communities.

Gatchalian’s call for vigilance serves as a broader message to all LGUs across the nation, reinforcing the need for local leaders to take responsibility for enforcing the law and ensuring their areas remain free from illegal operations. Failure to do so, as highlighted by the suspension in Porac, could result in serious consequences for those who neglect their duties.
