DigiPlus Interactive Corp. plans to apply for a gaming license in South Africa. This move comes just as the Philippines considers stricter rules—and possibly a full ban—on online gambling operators.
Company President Andy Tsui confirmed the plan during a Q2 earnings briefing. He explained that DigiPlus aims to explore new international markets, particularly those that allow remote gaming operations. Tsui emphasized that the company sees “great potential” in South Africa. He noted that the company has already begun preparations to meet local licensing requirements.
This strategic shift comes at a time when the Philippines is ramping up its crackdown on illegal online operators. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) recently announced that it had canceled 58 eGames licenses. PAGCOR also reported that over 160 eBingo sites had closed. The agency stated it will continue to remove inactive or non-compliant licensees.
PAGCOR’s latest actions reflect growing pressure from lawmakers. In recent months, several senators have renewed calls to ban all offshore and domestic online gaming in the country. They cited rising criminal activity, including kidnappings and human trafficking, allegedly tied to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).
Despite the growing scrutiny, Tsui said DigiPlus remains committed to complying with Philippine laws. He added that the firm continues to cooperate closely with regulators.
DigiPlus operates several digital gaming platforms in the Philippines, including BingoPlus and ArenaPlus. Both platforms offer eGames and remote betting options. However, these platforms have recently come under fire, with some lawmakers questioning the legality of their services. Critics also raised concerns about the platforms’ potential impact on social issues like addiction and financial risk.
Looking ahead, DigiPlus believes that expanding into new, regulated markets like South Africa will help reduce future business risks. The move also aligns with the company’s long-term strategy of building a stronger international presence.
As the Philippine government weighs stricter controls, DigiPlus appears to be making a calculated pivot. By targeting South Africa’s legal gaming sector, the company could create a safer, more stable path forward—even if online gambling faces new limits at home.
