President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. did not mention online gambling in his 2025 State of the Nation Address on Monday. This silence surprised some, especially given recent controversies surrounding illegal POGO operations in the country.
Instead, Marcos focused on economic progress, infrastructure development, and agriculture. Although the nation continues facing issues tied to POGOs, the president chose not to address them. This omission comes despite multiple raids on illegal hubs and growing public concern.
In June, government forces raided a large POGO facility in Pampanga. Authorities rescued hundreds of foreign workers and discovered signs of abuse. Moreover, lawmakers have held Senate hearings to review the POGO industry’s role in criminal activity.
Despite all this, Marcos avoided the topic entirely. Observers noted the absence, especially with PAGCOR and police actively cracking down on POGOs. Furthermore, the Department of Justice had earlier proposed tougher penalties against those running illegal operations.
Many expected Marcos to signal a firm policy stance. However, his silence left stakeholders uncertain. Regulators and business leaders now wait for further guidance.
In the meantime, enforcement agencies continue monitoring online gambling hubs. They aim to shut down illegal ones and protect legitimate operators. Although the industry generates revenue, risks tied to crime and human trafficking remain high.
As the government works through legal reforms, many wonder if Marcos will eventually take a stronger position. Until then, online gambling remains a topic left hanging.
