President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. may soon announce whether the Philippines will impose an online betting ban or introduce tighter online gambling rules. A recent report by Maybank Investment Bank Bhd pointed to a possible decision within the next few weeks.

Maybank’s analysts noted that regulators have already flagged risks linked to online gambling. In response, they expect the president to take a firmer stance. Pressure has increased from both lawmakers and national security officials. That pressure could push the administration to act swiftly.

Currently, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) allows licensed operators to offer online betting. These include both domestic and offshore firms under strict regulatory oversight. However, a surge in illegal operations—particularly rogue POGO hubs—has intensified the debate.

Authorities recently cracked down on several unlicensed gambling sites. These were linked to cyber fraud, human trafficking, and other criminal activity. According to Maybank, these events suggest the government might now lean toward a broader policy shift.

The investment bank believes two options are on the table. The president could enforce a total online betting ban in the Philippines. Alternatively, he could roll out tougher rules that raise transparency and limit operator access.

Either way, Maybank views this as a positive for the legal market. Stricter controls would likely strengthen PAGCOR’s oversight. They would also help weed out bad actors while protecting tax revenues from legitimate firms.

So far, the Marcos administration has remained quiet. But with increasing political and public pressure, a clear policy direction now seems likely. Maybank anticipates this announcement will come soon.

The decision could reshape the future of online betting in the Philippines. It will impact operators, investors, law enforcement, and millions of players who use digital gambling platforms today.
