A groundbreaking ceremony last Thursday officially launched construction on the PHP16.6-billion Subic Sun Convention Resort and Casino at Subic Bay Freeport. Developers broke ground on the project within the Subic Special Economic and Freeport Zone, aiming to open the first phase by late 2025.

Located in Central Luzon, about 170 kilometers northwest of Manila, the resort will include two internationally branded hotels under the Accor Group: Ibis Styles and Mercure Hotels. Eduardo Jose Aliño, Chairperson and Administrator of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, confirmed the resort’s location and scope.

Pablo Edgardo Puyat, Chair and President of Sun Convention Resort and Casino Inc., stated that Ibis Styles Subic will feature 175 rooms, along with a swimming pool, gym, and meeting facilities. The hotel is expected to open in 2026 and will become the first internationally branded hotel in Subic.

At the same time, Mercure Subic will add 250 rooms and plans to launch in 2026. Although reports did not disclose specific details on the casino’s gaming tables or electronic offerings, the announcement signaled major movement in the region’s integrated resort sector.

This project demonstrates how much investor confidence in the Philippine gaming industry continues to rise. Moreover, locating the development inside a Freeport zone could offer developers additional economic benefits and operational efficiencies.
