Senator Sherwin Gatchalian

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has renewed his call to completely eliminate Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) and their operations. He emphasized the urgent need for continued vigilance, especially beyond the government’s December 31, 2024, shutdown deadline.

During an interview with the Philippine News Agency, Gatchalian warned that criminal syndicates connected to former POGO activities continue to pose serious threats to public safety. He stressed the importance of remaining proactive. “We must stay committed to eradicating these risks to ensure public safety,” he said.

Gatchalian also expressed concern over former POGO operators who now rebrand their businesses as BPOs, restaurants, or resorts to disguise unlawful activities. He urged local government units and law enforcement agencies to identify and act on these deceptive tactics quickly and decisively.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Immigration continues to locate and deport approximately 11,000 individuals previously employed by POGOs who remain in the country without proper documentation. Gatchalian highlighted this initiative as a crucial step in enforcing the shutdown.

Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado recently reminded the public that harboring undocumented foreign nationals violates Philippine law. He stated that those who do so will face arrest and deportation proceedings, with no exceptions.

Gatchalian called on the government to improve inter-agency coordination and boost public awareness. As he continues to push for full enforcement, he stressed that the Philippines must not become a safe haven for groups engaged in criminal or unregulated offshore gaming.
