Sen Sherwin Gatchalian

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has strongly reminded local government units (LGUs) across the Philippines to learn from the recent suspension of officials in Porac, Pampanga. The Office of the Ombudsman suspended these officials after uncovering violations. They suspended the mayor, vice mayor, several councilors, and the head of Porac’s Business Permit and Licensing Office. The suspension followed a government raid on the Lucky South 99 POGO hub. This raid exposed illegal operations that continued despite clear national orders.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued a direct ban on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs). However, the local officials allowed POGOs to operate within their jurisdiction. This action violated the President’s order. Now, the suspended officials face charges of Gross Neglect of Duty. If found guilty, the government could dismiss them from their posts.

Senator Gatchalian emphasized that LGUs must play a critical role in maintaining law and order. They must act swiftly when they encounter illegal activities. He also underscored the importance of strictly following national directives. In particular, he pointed to the President’s firm stance on banning POGOs. These operators have been linked to various criminal activities and other serious problems.

Furthermore, Gatchalian said this case serves as a stark warning for all LGUs. They must not ignore illegal enterprises. Instead, they should remain proactive in preventing unlawful operations in their communities. His message to local leaders is clear: take responsibility for enforcing the law and keeping your areas free from illegal activities.

Ultimately, the suspension of officials in Porac highlights the consequences of neglecting duty. LGUs nationwide should heed this warning. If they fail to act, they could face similar serious repercussions.
